the AUDITION process
The main audition, held in March, covers one and a half days, as described below. Candidates have nothing to prepare for the audition, which runs as a dance class, but are required to wear appropriate dance clothing (leotard and tights). Modern dance is performed in bare feet while soft ballet slippers are required for the classical ballet portion of the audition. Specific dates for upcoming auditions can be found in the Upcoming events section.
Preliminary selection - first audition class
The first audition class, of approximately three hours duration, runs mostly as a contemporary dance class, but does include a few ballet exercises in the centre and a structured improvisation or short choreographic sequence. Candidates considered for admission to the diploma, certificate or preparatory program are authorized to proceed to the second day of assessment for the final selection.
Final selection - Full day workshop
The full-day workshop contains two complete technique classes (contemporary dance and ballet), a choreographic or repertory workshop and a personal interview. The three classes allow a more thorough evaluation of physical and artistic potential. The interview assists staff in measuring personal objectives and motivation, essential elements for the successful completion of these demanding programs. Candidates also undergo an evaluation of their physical fitness and receive personalized recommendations in order to better prepare for the rigours of intensive dance training and avoid injury.
Auditioning by videotape, CD-ROM or DVD
Candidates who are unable to attend the audition in person can submit a VHS videotape, CD-ROM or DVD to L’École de danse de Québec, along with the video audition fee of seventy dollars ($70), and the required photos, copy of birth certificate, etc. However, this type of audition can only serve as a preliminary assessment.
The videotape, CD-ROM or DVD should be a maximum of 60 minutes in length and contain excerpts from various technique classes including ballet barre and centre work, modern or jazz dance, and a short improvisation or solo dance. Students considered for admission to the program following a video application must attend a full-day workshop or await Summer Intensive to receive final confirmation of admission. For more information concerning auditioning by video, contact the school by phone or e-mail.
