classes for teens and adults

L’École de danse de Québec offers a wide range of classes for teens (15 years and older) and adults. Between two and six levels are offered for each type of dance, according to popularity and registration. This range of levels allows teens and adults who wish to fully develop their skills to progress semester-by-semester over a number of years. The recreational division also offers Pilates and Stretch and Strength classes as either a complement to dance training, or an excellent means to develop one's physical conditioning and overall well being.

Tap Dance
Tap dance is popular, fun and accessible to all. Introduced by African-Americans, tap dance experienced its heyday during the 1930’s and became a mainstay of musical theatre productions. Metal taps on the toes and heels of the shoes characterizes this dance form, which consists largely of creating a wide range of rhythms with one’s feet. Although largely based on the Al Gilbert technique, tap dance classes at L'École de danse de Québec are influenced by both traditional and modern styles.

Danse classique - Pointes

Ballet
Classical Ballet is the basis of all theatrical dance forms. Though it requires many years of intensive training to master, it is accessible to any individual who desires to dance for his or her own pleasure. It is also widely recognized as a necessary base for those who desire to pursue professional training in a theatrical dance form, hence its popularity with teens and young adults who wish to study in contemporary dance, musical theatre, etc. Intimately associated with classical ballet, pointe work requires good basic technique and strong feet and ankles. It can only be added upon the recommendation of the teacher.

Danse Hip Hop

Hip Hop
Very much in vogue with teens and young adults, Hip Hop finds its inspiration in the urban and street dance styles largely popularized through musical videos. Hip Hop classes combine elements of rap, funky and break dance with fascinating body isolations, jerky moves, small hops and jumps, all set in a dynamic framework. Classes at L'École de danse de Québec begin with a total body warm-up which includes stretch and strength exercises. Basic steps are then taught and rehearsed, before being combined in exciting choreographic combinations. Students are required to wear sneakers for this class.

Danse Jazz

Jazz simonson
An immensely popular dance style, Jazz dance was originally inspired by African rhythms and movement and developed by African Americans in the 1930s and 1940s. Whether it is danced to traditional African rhythms, jazz and blues or contemporary music, jazz dance explores the human body's full movement potential, making particular use of isolation, undulation and syncopation. Over the years, jazz dance masters have developed a number of valuable techniques and styles. L'École de danse de Québec bases its jazz dance classes on the technique developed by Mrs. Lynn Simonson, a virtually injury-free technique that allows students to develop a high level of body awareness and control.

Danse moderne

Modern Dance
A reflection of 20th Century American emancipation, modern dance is constantly evolving and changing. It first appeared as a reactionary movement to the perceived rigors of classical ballet, which many considered too constraining. However, like other theatrical dance forms, modern dance often makes use of certain balletic principles, while integrating a more organic series of movement possibilities. The use of the torso in contraction and release, the principles of equilibrium, fall and rebound, as well as the use of the floor distinguish these two major dance forms. In its classes for the general public, L'École de danse de Québec combines a number of influences rather than offering a single specific technique.

Danse Salsa

Salsa
Exotic rhythms and sensual movements are seamlessly blended in this exciting dance form. Salsa classes at L'École de danse de Québec are accessible to all, with or without a dance partner. Students explore different styles and techniques associated with Latin dance. Have fun and gain confidence as you integrate the essence of Salsa!

Pilates

Pilates
Pilates is an anatomically based method of exercise which incorporates controlled breathing patterns, safely stretches and strengthens the entire body and builds body awareness. Pilates matwork is designed to develop endurance and to balance the body's major muscle groups, with the focus on stabilising the pelvic and shoulder girdles and integrating a "neutral" alignment of the spine which respects its natural curves. This beneficial and revitalising method of exercise is of great value not only to professional dancers, but also to members of the general public. Though Pilates exercises can be adapted to each individual, the method is challenging and certain exercises can be contraindicated in some cases. Individuals who have an injury or a chronic health condition should seek the advice of their doctor before undertaking a Pilates course.

Souplesse & force

Stretch & Strength
Developed by teachers of L'École de danse de Québec in the late 1980s, this course focuses on improving the flexibility of the major joints and the strength of the major muscle groups. It introduces a series of exercises traditionally used in dance, yoga and body conditioning, sometimes with the use of elastic bands to increase the efficiency or the challenge. This course is accessible to dance students who wish to complement their regular training or to individuals who wish to increase their general level of conditioning and well being. Adult students in particular claim both physical and mental revitalisation though this course.
